Chairman’s Corner

New Members

I would like to welcome new member, Owen Holden.

The Big Wet

Our club, like the rest of Sydney, copped an enormous amount of rain on Tuesday 8 March. 191 ml were recorded in the rain gauge in the 24 hours before 7am on Wednesday.

Fortunately, the only damage we suffered was a light fitting in the kitchen and a small sink hole in a Green 1 ditch.  Both were quickly repaired.

I would like to thank our greenkeepers Chris and Brian who kept watch over the property while the rain was teeming down.  They also had our green up and running to their usual high standard by the following Saturday.  A great job.

The Bar

The draught beer lines have been turned off following the discovery of some unsafe equipment associated with the Cold Room.  Beers-R-Us, a firm that specialises in draught beer systems has been engaged to replace certain equipment and carry out mandatory inspections.  These should be completed by the end of the month.

Inflationary pressures have forced us to increase the bar prices from 2 April.  Prices have not been adjusted since September 2019 and we have kept the increases to a minimum.  Even after this adjustment, our club’s prices will be among the lowest, if not the lowest of any licenced premises on the north shore.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the backbone of any bowling club and while we have a good number chipping in to do many of the tasks, we can always do with more.  The Board is undertaking a review of volunteers and associated tasks.  In the meantime, if anyone feels they would like to become more engaged in club activities, please let me or any other Board member know.

Coaches

Gerry Ryman is currently our only qualified coach and he has up to 8 potential new members in need of coaching before they are ready to join the club.  Lorraine and Gary Forster have assisted Gerry, but we need more people to perform this very important role.  If you are interested, please let Gerry know.

Vale Brian Lemon

Brian was a long-time member of the Roseville Bowling Club who gave up bowling just before the amalgamation with LBC.  Brian served as RBC Treasurer for many years and was a much-valued club member.

Brian passed away on 23 February aged 92.

A word from the editor

“Rain, rain, go away, come back another day!”

Actually, scratch that, don’t bother coming back at all. After the deluge early this month I suspect we are all starting to think that maybe a drought isn’t so bad. Nearly 200mm of rain at the club in 24 hours is enough to test anyone’s patience, let alone operating systems and services. Let’s hope that that was a last desperate flush by La Nina and that our world now begins to dry out a bit. The picture above is not even from the recent deluge but from a previous downpour in January.

With multiple days lost due to the weather the past few weeks have constituted something of a “low news” month. Many external competitions and club matches have been severely affected by the rain so please refer to the “What’s Happening” summary below for an update.

A club like ours can operate only with the good will and hard work of many volunteers. Please note our chairman’s comments about that in this newsletter.

Happy bowling.

What’s been happening?

  • Despite the rain, our Minor Singles competition is more or less on schedule but the Consistency Singles competition is lagging quite a bit. Entries for the Club Triples closed on 19 March.

  • Our proposed hosting of “That Great Market” from East Lindfield has been deferred again, to a date to be fixed.

  • Five rounds of the Mid-Week Challenge competition have been completed, although Round 4 was a total washout and points were split evenly between teams because there is no space in the program for rescheduling of washed out games. Our #1 team leads their section, while our #2 team is in second place in their section.

  • For more information about this and other zone matters, please consult the new Zone 9 website, which can be found at: www.zone9.bowls.com.au

  • We have no news as yet as to when we will see the new uniforms currently on order.

From the Ladies’ President

The February BYO Lunch was again successful so these events will be continued on the 3rd Friday of every month indefinitely.

Our 2021 Women’s Pairs Competition has been organised with the draw being posted on the board.    This is the first women’s pairs competition for a few years so it is very pleasing to see the event happening. The first semi-final has been played and Ronny Vilensky and Berri Maraney have advanced to the final.

A one hour, Friday morning Roll-Up (practice), has started, with 6-8 ladies attending in the first few weeks.

The Jean McKinnon Trophy, with Lap representing Lindfield and Susie and Louise representing Killara, was cancelled because of the rain.  Due to a full calendar, it is not known when/if this will be played again this year.

We had a team play in the Belrose Summer Carnival which was a very enjoyable day.

We also had a team, which included one of our beginner ladies, Beverley Morrison, organised to play in the Seaforth Ladies Carnival which unfortunately was postponed but has now been rescheduled for 25 March.

Looking ahead …

Not surprisingly, the Tapner Tournament at St Ives was cancelled due to the weather and the event has been rescheduled to Monday, 16th May. A team from our club will participate in this tournament on the new date.

That does mean, however, that the Super Six Sets Carnival that we had scheduled for May 13th will need to be moved so as not to clash for support with the St Ives event. At this stage, Friday, 24th June looks like a suitable date.

End of Daylight Saving Time

Following the end of daylight-saving time on 3 April, social games will finish at 4pm to allow members to drive home while there is still some daylight.  To speed games up so the full 21 ends can be played, skips will place the jack rather than the leads rolling it.  There will be two jacks on each rink.

Competition games that require the jack to be rolled or placed on a fixed point will be played in accordance with those rules.

Rollers Funnies

Sometimes you just have to admit that it is time to retire…

I didn’t like my beard at first. Then it grew on me.

Haunted French pancakes give me the crepes.

A dentist and a manicurist married. They fought tooth and nail.

I have kleptomania, but when it gets bad, I take something for it.

There was a man who entered a pun contest in the North Shore Times. He sent in ten different puns, in the hope that at least one of the puns would win. Unfortunately, no pun in ten did.

Till next time …
