The big event over the past couple of months, apart from negotiations with the Bridge Club, was the Roseville Shield, which held at our club on September 27th. Eighteen teams from across the region participated on a day of fine weather that coupled with a great spirit of competitive comradery and an excellent lunch to make for a memorable and enjoyable day for all.

Ron Gee Kee has many claims to fame but being our oldest member is not one of them.

That honour belongs to Marie Milne, a life member from the East Roseville Bowling Club and that life membership has continued with the Lindfield Rollers. Marie who turned 103 last May, was Treasurer of the East Roseville Women’s Club for 22 years. She is currently living at Kowpa Aged Care in Roseville and wishes to be remembered to her friends that are still bowling.

Few people would argue that a good education can set you up for a successful life, especially when those critical adolescent years are spent at an excellent high school. For Jeff Ware it was Sydney Technical High School, located in Bexley, that set him solidly on the path to adulthood and a fulfilling professional career.

The 2024 Christmas luncheon was held at the Northbridge Golf Club, which proved to be a popular venue. Attendance was strong, the food was good and the ambience up to the usual Lindfield Rollers high standard. Our thanks go to those responsible for making the gathering a success, especially Nick Wiener.

June 5 saw a wonderful day at the Club celebrating Ron Gee Kee’s 100th birthday. Almost 100 members were in attendance. It was marvellous to see Ron playing lead for every team on the day and giving each team a lift with the accuracy of his bowls.

Bendigo Bank Visit

As most of you will know, Bendigo Bank is a major sponsor of our club. On Wednesday, 21st February we were pleased to welcome several representatives of the Lindfield Branch of Bendigo Bank to the club.

Our visitors were Sharon Franke, who looks after Community Engagement, Warren Dwyer, who is the Loans Manager and Jennifer Anderson, who is a Board Member of the Bank.

Members present were given an update on the range of services available from the bank and were encouraged to visit the Lindfield Branch for more information or assistance with their banking needs.

On Sunday, 10 December, 2023, some 76 members and guests attend the club’s annual End of Year and Christmas function, which was held at the Roseville RSL Club. The food was good, the wine flowed adequately, and a nice time was had by all. Garry Lowder provided a bit of light entertainment (or torture, depending on your viewpoint) with a brief excursion into the art of the classic Aussie Bush Ballad.

This year’s Roseville Shield was held at Lindfield Rollers Bowling Club on Saturday, 7 October. A total of 24 clubs competed in this year’s event in fine weather with just a bit of a chilly wind blowing across most of the day. The Shield is a unique event in that it is the only event of its type that brings together players from all clubs across the Zone at the one location on the one day where a result is also determined on the same day. In addition to the 96 bowlers participating in the Shield competition, a further 42 social bowlers played in the afternoon on the third green giving a total of 138 bowlers on the greens at the same time creating a great atmosphere.

The winners were Turramurra, who scored 37 points and a margin of 27 shots with their team comprising B. Hawtree, B. Southam, H. Brenner and G. Hamilton.

July 2023 Newsletter

July is the seventh month in our calendar but in the ancient Roman calendar it was the fifth month. As such, it was known by the Romans as ‘Quintilis’, meaning ‘fifth’, until Julius Caesar decided that naming this month after himself was a better idea. And so it was that the month became known as Julius (later corrupted to July), a name we have stuck with ever since. For the Romans, of course, it was the height of summer but for us it is the depth of winter, with cold mornings, short days and long shadows over Green 1. Not that these conditions have deterred our members, with good bowling numbers maintained throughout the period.
