Chairman’s Corner
End of Financial Year
At this time of year, we take stock of two key performance indicators: financial performance and bowling membership numbers.
It is extremely pleasing that, despite 3 months closure for COVID and an abnormal number of wet days, the Club has had a surplus in the order of $33,000. It should, however, be kept in mind that the Club received some $35,000 in government COVID assistance grants over the period.
The number of bowling members has increased by 2.
I would like to thank Ian Kimmorley and Gerry Ryman who have worked extremely hard delivering these outcomes.
Old Roseville Bowling Club Site
Over the years since our amalgamation, many members have asked “What is happening with the old Roseville Bowling Club site?”
The Ku-ring-gai Council is seeking to rezone the site from RE1 Public Recreation to R2 Low Density Residential. Details can be found at:
It is understood that the Council will go through a similar process with the former Gordon Bowling Club site.
Recently, the Council resolved to change the zoning of the Killara Bowling and Tennis Clubs from R2 Low Density Housing to RE2 Private Recreation, as well as heritage listing them.
Changes of zoning from recreation to housing dramatically increase property value and vice versa.
It is interesting to note that the Council is seeking to increase the value of the recreation properties it owns through rezoning but reduce the value of similar properties it does not own through rezoning and heritage listing.
COVID
As you are no doubt aware, the number of COVID cases is on the rise. Please be COVID aware and follow any new restrictions that might be implemented.

From the Women’s President
Our Women’s Singles Championship is at Semi-Final stage and Pairs have progressed to the Finals with Anne Rands & Julie Dunn to play Louise Amos and Ngoc Hau in the coming weeks.
It was a big disappointment having to cancel the Lindfield Shield on Friday 1st July due to lack of entries and it has also been disappointing to have four inter-club events and carnivals cancelled during the month due to a combination of wet weather, insufficient entries and COVID reasons.
Our Pennants season starts on 9th August, and it is with great pleasure that we have been able to enter three teams, one in Division 2, one in Division 4 and one in the “FIVES.” Good luck to our members!
Pictured below, L to R, are Susie Mears, Anne Rands, Louise Amos, Ngoc Hau and Julie Dunn, who have successfully competed in recent carnivals.
Louise & Ngoc also participated in Western Suburbs WBC Magpies Pairs carnival on 20th June and came equal third.
Susie, Anne, Louise, Ngoc and Julie played in the Dee Why Open Versatility “Five-A-Side” day and came 5th out of 14 clubs. They won a small cash prize, enough to cover their petrol costs! They all reported having a fun day.
It is also encouraging to see a good number of our new women bowlers have renewed their membership for the coming year and hopefully they may be encouraged to join our social competitions on a more regular basis.

A Word from the Editor
It is a bit of a low news month this month. There are several club competitions nearing but not yet reaching the finals stage and we are month or so away from the Zone Pennants competitions for both men and women. There is good news from the Chairman concerning our financial good health and it has been pleasing to see several of our women bowlers out and about, playing in competitions held elsewhere, with some success I might add.
Quiet achiever, Arnold Green, continues to be active in generating grants from various sources that assist our club to have the excellent facilities it does. Of particular note this month is the grant of $1,500 from Ku-ring-gai Council as part of their Community Grants Program for 2021-22. The money received by the club from Council has been used to purchase six sets of new bowls specifically for use in introducing new bowlers to the game and helping them gain the confidence to participate fully in our bowling activities. The club is very grateful to Ku-ring-gai Council for making this grant to us and the new bowls should enhance considerably the learning experience of our new Rollers.
I would also like to remind all club members that we have a number of sponsors whose financial assistance is much appreciated by the club. Our principal sponsor is ATLAS Real Estate, represented by Stephanie Hearne. Please talk to Stephanie if you are considering selling your home.
Another of our sponsors, Mr Drains, is offering you a free drain inspection, valued at $300, if you suspect your drains may be blocked or damaged.

What’s been happening?
We have five club competitions underway at present, comprising the Club Triples, Men’s Major Singles, Men’s Major Pairs, Women’s Major Singles and Women’s Major Pairs. It was planned that all of these competitions would be completed by the time Pennants begin in August but that now seems unlikely. However, please do your best to adhere to that timetable so we can get a clear run of talent for Pennants.
For men, the Pennants competition commences on August 13th and runs for six weeks, before the finals rounds. We will enter a team in each of Division Three and Division Four. The women’s Pennants begins a little earlier, on August 9th and we will have teams in each of Division Two and Division Four, as well as a team in the “Fives”. Once Pennants season is over the remaining club competitions for 2022 will be the Club Fours, Handicap Triples and Mixed Pairs.
As noted above in Lorraine Forster’s report, our women bowlers have been playing in several external competitions of late, enjoying considerable success.
It is good to note, too, that Lee Gardiner has now qualified as an accredited Coach.
You may have noticed recently the installation of new metal seats, replacing the old wooden ones, for Green 3.
Looking ahead …
With Pennants approaching, a round of the Bridge Trophy against Forestville RSL is scheduled for Saturday, July 30th. This will also serve as a trial for the Men’s Pennant competition selections so only men will participate in this event.
Consideration is being given to running a new competition specifically for our ‘newer’ bowlers, defined as those with up to five years of bowling experience. If this could be of interest to you, please let Phil Lewis or me (Garry Lowder) know, as we would like to get a feeling for the likely number of participants.
