Christmas Lunch

Unfortunately, I was interstate and missed the Christmas Lunch.  By all reports it was a great success and I would like to thank Nick Wiener and Liz for making the arrangements.

I am sad to say the Roseville Club will not be available next Christmas with the site going under re-development later this year.  We will be on the search for another venue and if you know of one that might be suitable, please let Nick know.

Attendance

It is wonderful to see so many of our members playing regularly on Wednesdays and Saturdays, keeping the Club vibrant and buoyant.  Having good numbers allows the social selectors to give our members the experience of bowling regularly with new players.  Several bowling clubs in our area are only able to fill 3 or 4 rinks each bowling day which doesn’t allow the rich social mix we enjoy.

Presentation Day

This will be held on Saturday 27 January.  Afternoon tea will be served at 3:15 and the presentations will follow.  Green fees will be $11 due to the shortened playing time.

Please come along and congratulate our competition winners.

New Members

I would like to extend a warm welcome to new bowling members who have joined the club recently: Derek Cornelius, Nick Ireland and Jo Millyard.

Happy New Year

Happy New Year!

It is my honour to be elected as President of the Women’s Bowling Club. I am pleased to contribute to the Lindfield Rollers Newsletter for the first time.

Preparation for the 2023-2024 Pennant season is well underway. This year, the Women’s Club has entered a Division 2 side of eight players. Matches will be played every Tuesday from 6 Feb to 12 March 2024. I am grateful to the Selectors for the hard work they have put in to-date with team selection and training.

Some of the lady bowlers have put their names down for Open Gender Pennant selection.

We have entered one team in the (Under) Fives competition which will run concurrently with the Women’s Pennant season. This competition is run at a District level organized by the North Shore District Women’s Bowling Association. It is open to teams (women/men/mixed) of four players who were affiliated on or after 1 January 2019.

A big welcome to Jo Millyard who has recently joined the Club.

Good health and happy bowling.

A Word from the Editor

Happy New Year to all my fellow bowlers!

So, 2024 is off and running, with a busy programme lined up for the months ahead, beginning with both the Ladies’ Pennants and the Mixed Gender Pennants. The Ladies’ season will extend from February 6th to March 12th, while the Mixed Gender Pennants season will comprise ten rounds and extend from February 10th to May 11th. There will be a hiatus in this Pennants competition in the second half of March to allow people to participate in state matches to be held at that time and also to cover the Easter break. We have entered one Grade 5 team and one Grade 6 team in this competition.

With the Covid crisis hopefully well and truly behind us (though of course the bug is still around and infecting people) our club continues to enjoy good patronage and support from our members. We have lost a few playing days due to rain or high heat, but by and large, our games have been able to proceed so our finances are pretty much on budget. Thanks once again go to Ian Kimmorley for holding those purse strings suitably tensioned, and to all the volunteers who, by providing their labour so willingly, enable the club as a whole to function effectively and economically.

Which brings me to a point – the Board is actively seeking further volunteers to assist in operating the club, with attention turning particularly to our newer members. There is now quite a number of such people, although most are yet to take a role in running our club. So, if you are able, willing and would like to contribute, please contact Roger Parks in the first instance. You don’t have to have prior experience and it is a great way to get to know your fellow bowlers more quickly. “New blood” in the volunteer ranks will certainly help the club maintain its vitality.

Uniforms – We currently have a pretty good stock of uniforms in all sizes, except for men’s shirts (long and short sleeve) in size XS, of which we have none (there is minimal to no demand) and XXXL, also none in stock due to low demand, although the next reorder will include a couple of this size.

We also have adequate numbers of fleece vests and jackets, which are unisex in nature. All sizes from XS to XL are available, although there are only three or four of size XS (suits some of the ladies).

If you would like a new shirt or fleece, please see me before or after bowls and I will endeavour to oblige. I will reorder when stocks diminish, but delivery takes some time, so if you need to update your bowls wardrobe, now is the time!

Current prices are:

  • Men’s shirts (SS)    $55

  • Men’s shirts (LS)      $60

  • Ladies’ shirts (SS)    $55

  • Ladies’ shirts (LS)    $60

  • Fleece vests             $50

  • Fleece jackets          $60

  • Caps                       $16

Enjoy your 2024 bowling year.

What’s been happening?

On Sunday, 10 December, 2023, some 76 members and guests attend the club’s annual End of Year and Christmas function, which was held at the Roseville RSL Club. The food was good, the wine flowed adequately, and a nice time was had by all. Garry Lowder provided a bit of light entertainment (or torture, depending on your viewpoint) with a brief excursion into the art of the classic Aussie Bush Ballad.

Here are some photos from the happy occasion:

Club Competitions

The 2023 Mixed Pairs competition was completed early this month and was won by Ian Kimmorley and Ngoc Hau, who defeated Roger Parks and Marlene Black. Congratulations to the winners; commiserations to the losers!

Ray White Upper North Shore Sponsorship

On 22 November, 2023 the club ran a day of competitions hosted and funded by our major sponsor, Ray White Upper North Shore, represented by Stephanie Hearne. The day was a resounding success, well attended and thankfully held in perfect weather.

The overall winners on the day were Bruce Edwards, Ron Gee Kee and Neil Gosbell.

Winners are grinners:

Looking ahead …

Presentation Day – The club’s annual Presentation Day will be held on Saturday, 27th January 2024. On that day there will be an abbreviated playing session, finishing at 3.15pm, when afternoon tea will be served. Green fees will be reduced to $11 to reflect the shortened playing time.

Presentations will commence immediately following the tea break. Please join in the celebrations and add your congratulations to all our winners.

Pennants – This year’s Pennants competitions begin in early February. The Ladies will play for six weeks, beginning on Tuesday, 6th February and the Mixed Gender competition will run to ten matches held on Saturdays from February 10th (with a break in the second half of March).

A Smile on Your Dial

Here are a few ‘One Liners’ that offer some sound wisdom and insight, or profound cynicism, depending on your point of view:

  • He who smiles in a crisis has found someone to blame.

  • Light travels faster than sound. This is why some people appear bright until you hear them speak.

  • Politicians and nappies have one thing in common. They should both be changed regularly, and for the same reason.

  • If I agree with you, we'll both be wrong.

  • To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism. To steal from many is research.

  • A bus station is where a bus stops. A train station is where a train stops. I am sitting at a workstation.

  • War does not determine who is right. It determines who is left.

Hear hear!

Some views of marriage …

Senior reflections:

  • My mind is like an internet browser. At least 19 open tabs, 3 of them are frozen and I have no idea where the music is coming from.

  • Turns out that being a “senior" is mostly just googling how to do stuff.

CLASSIC CAR ADS

FOR LOVERS OF PUNS:

  • Dad, are we pyromaniacs? Yes, we arson.

  • Why do bees stay in their hives during winter? Swarm.

  • If you’re bad at haggling, you’ll end up paying the price.

  • Just so everyone’s clear, I’m going to put my glasses on.

  • A sergeant major walks into a bar and orders everyone around.

  • I lost my job as a stage designer. I left without making a scene.

  • Never buy flowers from a monk. Only you can prevent florist friars.

  • How much did the pirate pay to get his ears pierced? A buccaneer.

  • Why is it unwise to share your secrets with a clock? Well, time will tell.

  • When I told my contractor I didn’t want carpeted steps, they gave me a blank stare.

  • Bono and The Edge walk into a Dublin bar and the bartender says, “Oh no, not U2 again.”

  • I’m trying to organize a hide and seek tournament, but good players are really hard to find.

  • What do you say to comfort a friend who’s struggling with grammar? There, their, they’re.

  • I went to the toy store and asked the assistant where the Schwarzenegger dolls are and he replied, “Aisle B, back.”

  • What did the surgeon say to the patient who insisted on closing up their own incision? Suture self.

  • I’ve started telling everyone about the benefits of eating dried grapes. It’s all about raisin awareness.

Finally:

It’s hard to believe I once had a phone attached to a wall, and when it rang, I picked it up without knowing who was calling. And I'm still alive!

Till next time …
