Ron Gee Kee’s 100 Birthday Celebration

June 5 saw a wonderful day at the Club celebrating Ron Gee Kee’s 100th birthday. Almost 100 members were in attendance.

It was marvellous to see Ron playing lead for every team on the day and giving each team a lift with the accuracy of his bowls.

I would like to thank Gary Forster for arranging a photobook of the day’s events at the Club as a memento for Ron.

Ron and Betty’s ’s achievements were acknowledged by Peter FitzSimons’ column in the Sydney Morning Herald on 15 June.

Visit by Matt Cross MP

Also in June, local state MP Matt Cross made the Lindfield Rollers his first official port of call following bowel cancer surgery.

Matt presented the Club with a display cheque for $4,087 for new aluminium seats for Green 3.

Arnold Green did a wonderful job organizing this NSW Local Sports Grant.

Family Day

The Club held a family day on Sunday 26th May, attended by about 35 members and visitors.  They enjoyed a sausage sizzle and a modified game of bowls.  Many thanks to Gary Forster, Gerry Ryman and Nick Wiener for organizing the day.

New Members

I would like to extend a warm welcome to new bowling members who have joined the club recently, Shirley Fisher and Duncan Craik.

Unification

The unification of the NSW men’s and women’s bowls association has led to bowling clubs needing to update their governance documents, so they are consistent with the new state unified structure.  In plain terms, this means there will no longer be separate men’s and women’s bowling clubs and the governance documents will need to reflect this.

To this end, the Board has been working on the changes necessary to redraft the Club Constitution and will be submitting this to members for approval at the Annual General Meeting in October.

Bridge Club

Our friends at the Bridge Club are giving bowling club members a $50 discount on their next Introduction to Bridge Course which normally costs $150.

The bowling calendar has been quite busy for some of us. Here are some of the fun things we did:

Carnival and District Events

Chic Strachan, Bev Morrison, Trish Boyle and Lorraine Forster were selected to play in the Turramurra Trophy.

Julie Dunn, Ngoc Hau, Susie Meares, Lorraine Forster and myself were selected to represent Lindfield in the St Ives Top 5. We were happy to have come 3rd.

Ngoc Hau, Jo Millyard, Lap Chen and Julie Dunn won the AM game at the Seaforth Autumn Carnival.

Ngoc Hau, myself and Willie Mok were selected to play in the Neutral Bay Peter Russell Trophy. Eight clubs participated and we came 4th.

Susie Meares, Julie and myself were selected to represent Lindfield Rollers in the St Ives Tapner Club Challenge.

Susie Meares and myself were selected as part of the Region 15 side of 32 players to play against the Region 16 side in the Anita Linden Trophy event which was held in April. Our side won and brought home the silverware.

Another similar event held in June was the Jean McKinnon Shield where the North Shore District played against the Manly Warringah District.

Julie Dunn, Ngoc Hau and myself were selected as part of the North Shore District side of 40 players. Our side won by a narrow margin.

Women’s Pennant

Due to various reasons and after much to-ing and fro-ing liaising with St Ives, District Match committee and State Match committee, we are unable to enter our intended composite team entries with St Ives in the 2024-2025 Women’s Pennant competition in August. Thank you to all the players who showed their interest for your patience and understanding. I would also like to thank Julie Dunn for all the work she has done.

Metro North East Region

From 1 July 2024, the men’s Zone 9 and women’s Districts of Manly-Warringah and North Shore ceased to operate; all clubs currently in these areas have since joined together in the new Metro North-East Bowls Region.

A Word from the Editor

This is a somewhat abbreviated Newsletter, in view of my recently being medically indisposed, but hopefully I have captured the key components of happenings at 2b Carlyle Rd, East Lindfield over the past few months.

As noted by the Chairman, above, and strongly endorsed by me, the standout event of recent times was the recognition and celebration of Ron Gee Kee’s 100th birthday.

Such a milestone is a wonderful achievement for anyone, but to reach this venerable age while still very active in sport and social activities, both within our club and elsewhere, is beyond remarkable.

This view was shared by columnist, Peter Fitzsimons, who wrote a very nice tribute to Ron that appeared in the Sydney Morning Herald on June 15th.

On Wednesday, 5th June, the club recognised the momentous occasion with a special bowls day. To begin with, Ron moved from rink to rink, playing lead and showing the youngsters how it is done. Then, with an early finish, we all gathered inside to toast our esteemed member and share in the birthday celebrations, including a magnificent birthday cake.

The photographs below are a collage from that day, showing both Ron and his bride (of 76 years), Betty, modestly accepting the accolades we were all happy to bestow.

NEW SEATS

Due to the great work of Arnold Green, the club was successful obtaining a grant of $4087 from the NSW government to replace the wooden seats on Green 3. Thanks indeed to Arnold for making this happen.

The club also expresses our sincere gratitude to the NSW Department of Sport for their generous support.

Also, as noted by Roger Parks, on June 12th, our local member, Mr Matt Cross, visited the club to present a symbolic cheque to mark this award to the club.

Matt Cross presents the symbolic cheque to club chairman, Roger Parks.

FAMILY DAY IN MAY

For the first time in quite a while (maybe ever) the club held a Family Fun Day on Sunday, 26th May. Attendance was not overwhelming (about 35 turned up) but those who were there enjoyed a fun afternoon, playing a modified form of bowls, empowered by a sausage sizzle and a modicum of sustaining fluids!

Gary Forster, Gerry Ryman and Nick Wiener for responsible for organizing the day and our thanks go to them for making it happen.

A Smile on Your Dial

This time we bring you a few smiles, a few “wows”, and a link to a video that will have you grinning from ear to ear!

The Beipanjiang Bridge in China

At 565 m over the Beipan River, it is the highest bridge in the world.

Despite the difficulty and majesty of the work (1341 m long and over 44 thousand tons of steel) it was completed in just 3 years and inaugurated on 29 December 2016. The construction of the bridge reduced over 40 km (of winding roads) the connection between the two sides of the valley.

Note the garden terraces and houses on the left side slope.
