Chairman’s Corner

Roger Parks

The Chairman’s Corner is empty this month, as Roger is away on holidays.

From the Women’s President

Lorraine Forster

The Women’s Pairs Final has been completed with Anne Rands and Julie Dunn winning after having to play an extra end to separate the two pairs in a very competitive but friendly game. Congratulations to Julie and Anne and well done to Louise and Ngoc for reaching the finals.

Anne Rands and Julie Dunn

Winners of the Women’s Major Pairs competition for 2022

Ngoc Hau and Louise Amos

Runners-up in the Women’s Major Pairs

The Women’s Championship Singles is at Finals stage with Louise Amos to play Susie Meares to decide our Women’s Singles Champion for 2022/2023

With great pride we announce that our Grade 2 won the 2022/2023 District No. 2 Pennant by a very comfortable margin. The Pennant will be presented to the Club on Saturday 24th September and the Regional Play-Off against Dee Why will be held on the 16th of October.  Good luck to our ladies in this play-off

It is also with pride that we were able to enter three teams, one team in Grade 2, Grade 4 and the “FIVES”, after not being able to enter a Pennant team for a few years due to lack of available players and the Pandemic.  Grade 4 came second in their division and the FIVES, consisting of three members with less than 1 years’ experience, had a ball and have now become regular playing members in our social games.

Having looked back through the History Books, the Lindfield Club has a very proud history going back over many years and, when combined with the Roseville/Lindfield Amalgamation, our record is very impressive.

Our LRBC Grade 1 Pennant Team won their division in 2013 with their team consisting of:

R. Saidman; D Reilly; M Vilensky; R Dodds; B Maraney; B Prissman; B. Slon; V Bartrop

This was followed by winning the No 3 Pennant in 2017 consisting of a combined Lindfield Rollers BC and Killara Ladies BC.   The combined team consisted of:

B. Maraney; B Slon; M Vilensky; M Wides from Lindfield Rollers BC and

N Hau; L Amos; C Cornell; S Meares from Killara BC.

A Word from the Editor

The Men’s Pennants season for 2022 has come and gone, with mixed and somewhat disappointing results for Lindfield Rollers, who fielded teams in Division 3 and Division 4.

The Women’s Pennants season has also finished, with great success achieved by our successful Women's Grade 2 Pennant side. Please see the Women’s President’s report above for more details.

For more information on the Pennants competitions, please see below under “What’s Been Happening?” and click on the links provided for details.

It is pleasing to see a steady stream of new members joining our club and we give them a collective hearty welcome. Our thanks go to Gerry Ryman for all the time and effort he puts into introducing these new players to the game of bowls and coaching them as they start their bowling journey.

Our uniform supply is now reasonably healthy so please see me if you need a new item. New caps are on order and should be available in a week or so.

It has been good to see Brian Dowsett back on deck, helping out as usual as much as he can, subject to doctor’s orders.

Ian Kimmorley advises that our club continues to trade profitably and that we are in a sound financial position. Bowling numbers for August were excellent at 461, or 144% of our August plan of 320, with nil lost playing days due to bad weather. The August result was the 3rd best since 2019. Our thanks go to Ian for looking after our finances and accounts so well.

VALE: MARTYN CHAPMAN

We have been advised that one of our long-standing members, Martyn Chapman, passed away a week ago. Martyn served on the Board at the old Roseville Club for a couple of years and was instrumental in the upgrading of the clubhouse. Martyn had been awarded an Order of Australia for his contribution to Architecture.

For those that would like to pay their respects to Martyn, the funeral service will be held at 10am on Tuesday, 20 September at St Peters Church, 29 Waters Rd, Cremorne. This will be followed by morning tea in the adjacent function room.

What’s been happening?

Men’s Pennants

All six rounds of the Men’s Pennants competition have now been completed (except for the rain-affected Round 4, which has not been rescheduled).

The Division 3 team finished at the bottom of the Section 2 ladder (of four), though by the narrowest of margins – 1 point, after going down to Belrose 9-1 at Lindfield last Saturday. Belrose finished the clear leader in this competition, although it should be noted that Belrose and Asquith played one extra match than we did. Our Round 4 match against Turramurra was washed out on September 3rd but Belrose and Asquith managed to play their match. So, the points difference is not quite what it seems. Perhaps surprisingly, Lindfield defeated Belrose when they played at Belrose, and then suffered the reverse when the return match took place at our club. You can view the Division 3 competition match results here: Division 3

Click on the Ladder tab to see where each club stood after Round 6.

The Division 4 team finished third (of four) in their competition, after going down 10-0 to Belrose at Belrose last Saturday. In this case all four teams played only five rounds, with Round 4 having been washed out for all on September 3rd. Belrose finished on top of the ladder. The Lindfield team managed to beat Belrose when they played at home but lost when playing away at Belrose. You can view the Division 4 competition results here: Division 4

Women’s Pennants

Lindfield Rollers’ three Women’s Pennant teams finished their 2022 – 2023 season on Thursday 25th August.  Our Division 2 team are the 2022-23 Division 2 Regional Pennant Winners and will be playing in the Regional Play Off against Dee Why at Belrose on 16th October. Hearty congratulations to these ladies.

The most exciting thing for the Lindfield Club is that we were able to enter three teams in this year’s Pennant competition, with our team in Division 4 and another in the “FIVES”, both finishing second after being in the count right up until their last matches.

The victorious Division 2 ladies will receive their Pennant at our club on Saturday, 24 September at 10.15am. Please try to be there to congratulate them on their success.

Looking ahead …

We have entered four teams in the Zone Reserve Pairs competition, namely: Kuzma Petkovic and Gary Forster; Ian Kimmorley and Willie Mok; Morris Sher and Arnold Green; Ian Holden and Phil Lewis. This competition will be played at Pittwater Memorial BC on Sundays, commencing on 11 September. All details about this competition now appear on Bowlslink.

Entries for the State Mixed Pairs competition are currently open and must be entered through Bowlslink. Julie Dunn and Phil Lewis have submitted an entry. Louise Amos is entering with a player from Belrose. Players do not need to be from the same club (or for that matter, the same Zone).

The Ku-Ring-Gai Shield is scheduled for play at St Ives BC on Saturday, 24th September.

It is hoped to stage a “friendly” match against Neutral Bay at Lindfield Rollers on Saturday, 19th November. To be confirmed.

Finally, The Roseville Shield is scheduled for Saturday, 3 December

CHRISTMAS SOCIAL

Garth Aston and his Social Committee team are currently putting together the Club’s Annual Christmas Lunch, which will take place on Sunday, December 11th. An impressive buffet menu will be provided. The cost will be $70 per person (down from $85 as proposed earlier). Drinks will be available from the bar at the usual prices.

A sheet for RSVP and table bookings will be put up shortly. Most tables will be for 6, but a few tables of 8 can be accommodated. Numbers will be limited, so an early RSVP is advised.

A Smile on Your Dial

Signs of Old Age - 1

A couple in their nineties are both having problems remembering things. During a check-up, the doctor tells them that they're physically okay, but they might want to start writing things down to help them remember.

Later that night, while watching TV, the old man gets up from his chair. 'Want anything while I'm in the kitchen?' he asks.

'Will you get me a bowl of ice cream?'

'Sure.'

'Don't you think you should write it down so you can remember it?' she asks.

'No, I can remember it.'

'Well, I'd like some strawberries on top, too. Maybe you should write it down, so as not to forget it?'

He says, 'I can remember that. You want a bowl of ice cream with strawberries.'

'I'd also like whipped cream. I'm certain you'll forget that, write it down,' she suggests.

Irritated, he says, 'I don't need to write it down, I can remember it! Ice cream with strawberries and whipped cream - I got it. For goodness sake!'

Then he toddles into the kitchen shaking his head. After about 20 minutes, the old man returns from the kitchen and hands his wife a plate of bacon and eggs. She stares at the plate for a moment, then says irritably:

'Where's my toast?'

Signs of Old Age - 2

An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen.

The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, 'Last night we went out to a really great new restaurant. I can recommend it very highly.'

The other man said, 'Sounds good. What’s the name of the restaurant?'

The first man thought and thought and finally said, 'What's the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know, the one that's red and has thorns.'

'Do you mean a rose?'

'Yes, that's the one,' replied the man.

He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, 'Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went to last night?'

***

Signs of Old Age - 3

An elderly man was telling his neighbour, 'I just bought a new hearing aid. It cost me four thousand dollars, but it’s state of the art. Absolutely perfect.'

'Really,' answered the neighbour. 'What kind is it?'

'Twelve thirty.'

Henry married a rich widow and all was sweetness and light at first. But after a while they began to argue and were not getting along at all well.

One day in exasperation she turned to him and said,

“If it wasn’t for my money, that big flat-screen TV wouldn’t be here. If it wasn’t for my money, you’d still be driving that old jalopy you used to have. If it wasn’t for my money, you wouldn’t be living in such a grand house.”

In reply, Henry mumbled,

“If it wasn’t for your money, I wouldn’t be here.”

  • I went into a disposal store the other day to buy some camouflage trousers but I couldn't see any.

  • Local Police are hunting the 'knitting needle nutter', who has stabbed six people in the rear in the last 48 hours. They believe the attacker could be following some kind of pattern.
